The Health Service Commissioners and General managers received training from the African Union on Competency Based Interviewing Techniques. This marks a significant step towards improving the recruitment and selection process in the entire health sector.

Competency Based Interviewing is a structured interview process that focuses on assessing an individual’s specific skills, abilities, and behaviours relevant to the job they are being interviewed for. By utilizing this interviewing technique, organizations are guaranteed of selecting candidates who possess the necessary competencies to excel in their roles.

During the workshop, experts from the African Union, including Director of Operations J. Rico J. Bien Aime, Head of Recruitment Unit Mrs. Aude L. Ayo, and HR Information Communication Systems expert Orilogbou Christopher, imparted their knowledge and insights on CBI to the participants. The training provided valuable information on how to conduct effective competency-based interviews, evaluate candidates objectively, and make informed hiring decisions based on merit and competence.

Addressing the workshop participants, Chairman of the Health Service Commission, Dr Vincent Hungwe emphasized the importance of integrating Competency Based Interviewing into the recruitment system of the Health Sector. He highlighted how CBI is a critical tool for promoting inclusivity and diversity within the workforce, ensuring that underrepresented groups such as women, youths, and persons with disabilities are given equal opportunities for employment and advancement within the health sector.

By implementing Competency Based Interviewing Techniques, the HSC aims at enhancing the overall quality of its recruitment processes, improve the selection of qualified and competent candidates which guarantees the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to the public. The knowledge and skills gained from the workshop will enable the Commissioners and General managers to conduct interviews recruitment more effectively, assess candidates fairly, and support the organization’s commitment to excellence.

In his remarks, Dr Christopher Pasi said, “This program comes at a very opportune moment for the HSC as we are currently working to fill a lot of vacant positions in the health service. We aim to be taken through a journey of discovery as we delve into the art of interviewing in order to focus on the competencies that matter”.

“We also hope to be armed with powerful tools to use during this critical phase of the recruitment process, so that we fulfil our mandate to engage appropriately qualified and competent persons for the Health Service”, he added.

The Competency Based Interviewing Techniques workshop organized by the Africa Union for the Health Service Commission commissioners and general managers signifies a proactive approach towards enhancing recruitment practices and promoting diversity and inclusivity in the health sector. By embracing CBI principles and processes, the HSC is taking a significant step towards building a skilled and diverse workforce that is equipped to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the population.
