HSC tours the new lab at UBH

The Health Service Commission (HSC) recently conducted an official tour of the newly constructed Reference Laboratory at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s healthcare development. The visit underscores the Commission’s commitment to improving health infrastructure, promoting research, and ensuring the highest standards of clinical diagnostics across the country.

Led by senior officials from the HSC, including Major General (Rtd) Dr Gerald Gwinji, Commissioner Josephine Mwakutuya, Commissioner Mercy Gwaunza and general managers the delegation was received by the UBH executive team, who provided a comprehensive overview of the laboratory’s capabilities, construction process, and expected impact on both regional and national healthcare delivery. The Reference Laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, is designed to serve as a central hub for specialized testing and disease surveillance.

During the tour, HSC commissioners engaged with medical laboratory scientists, technicians, and hospital management to better understand how the facility will strengthen diagnostic capacity, particularly in the areas of infectious diseases, cancer detection, and public health emergencies. The laboratory is expected to significantly reduce turnaround times for critical tests and enhance Zimbabwe’s readiness for future health crises.

Speaking during the visit, HSC representatives praised the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Child Care, development partners, and local medical professionals, which made the successful completion of the project possible. They emphasized the importance of continued investment in laboratory services as a foundation for evidence-based healthcare and effective patient treatment.

The UBH Reference Laboratory is expected to benefit not only Bulawayo and the southern region but also support national diagnostic needs by relieving pressure on Harare-based facilities. It represents a major step forward in achieving equitable access to quality healthcare services across Zimbabwe.

As the HSC continues its oversight and support role in public health service delivery, such engagements with medical institutions remain crucial in aligning infrastructure development with the country’s health priorities and standards.
